Kumasi Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have emerged as winners of the maiden Democracy Cup after beating Accra Hearts of Oak 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Kotoko’s win marks the third victory in a row for the Porcupine Warriors over their biggest rival Accra Hearts of Oak. Kotoko beat Hearts 3-2 and 2-0 in the 2023-2024 Ghana Premier League season.

The game served as the main attraction of the event fronted by Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to mark the 30th anniversary of democratic governance in Ghana.

A curtain raiser involving some parliamentarians and former Black Stars was played and had the select Ghana Parliament side win 3-1. A pair of Parliamentarians expressed their concerns about the state of the pitch after the game. (Click highlighted text to read full story)

A converted penalty kick by Justice Blay and a shot by Peter Amidu that should have been saved by goalkeeper Kwesi Nketiah in the 62nd minute gave Kotoko the win. Amidu proceeded to celebrate in Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham’s trademark style.
