John Dramani Mahama, President-elect of the Republic of Ghana
President-elect John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians of his commitment to investigating the deaths that occurred during the December 7, 2024 general elections.
Four people were reportedly killed during the elections, sparking public outrage and calls for accountability.
He described the incidents as unfortunate blemishes on an otherwise successful electoral process.
Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from the European Union, Mr. Mahama expressed concern over the loss of lives and promised swift action to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
“We are happy about the smooth, successful election we had. Unfortunately, there were a few incidents that have marred it – a few deaths. It is our intention to investigate what led to the deaths of those people,” he said.
Mr. Mahama emphasized the need for justice, stating that anyone found culpable would face the law.
“And if people are culpable, then they need to pay the price for what they’ve done,” he noted.
The President-elect indicated his administration’s readiness to prioritize the matter if the outgoing government fails to act.
“As soon as things settle, I hope that this government will start to investigate those incidents. But if that does not happen, we will do it as soon as we come into office,” he assured.
