The campaign team, RAfGOCP2025, of renowned lawyer Richard Akpokavie, has hinted to the Graphic Sports that he is set to contest for the prestigious position of GOC president when the seat becomes vacant in March.
The team, which comprises sports association members, general secretaries and president of some sports federations, says they wish to remain anonymous for now but confirmed to the Graphic Sports that Akpokavie will ensure Ghana gets its first gold medal at the Commonwealth games, summer and Winter Olympics and will pay equal attention to all sporting discipline.
” Mr Richard Akpokavie will use his leverage and expertise in Ghana sports to lure corporate bodies and international entities to throw their weight behind sports and sponsor sporting activities in the country,” RAfGOCP2025 told the Graphic Sports in a telephone conversation last Saturday.
They noted that Mr Akpokavie will create functional subcommittees and unite all the sporting disciplines, federations, and association heads in the country to use sports as a tool for creating employment and generating revenue for the country.
“He will launch his manifesto in a week or two and we will get the details; he is so enamored with sports in Ghana that he will leave no stone unturned to make sports a great enterprise in Ghana,” they stated.
Mr Akpokavie, a former General Secretary of the GOC and pioneer of Ghana Hockey, is expected to bring on board a huge expertise of talent and teamwork if he is elected.
A former student of Achimota School, the respected legal practitioner honed his hockey skills at Achimota School before playing for the national team. He will later be instrumental in forming the Under 17 National Hockey team.
The team told the Graphic Sports that Ghanaians should trust Mr Akpokavie to make Ghana Sports a national pastime and an industry that will bring major foreign exchange and provide local currency to develop the country.
The GOC will have an extraordinary congress on January 25 to deliberate on the upcoming electoral congress and set a date for the congress.
