Black Queens’ friendly matches at risk due to funding issues

The Black Queens’ upcoming international friendlies against Senegal and Tunisia are in jeopardy due to a lack of funding.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) have not secured the $40,000 needed to organize the matches, according to Joy Sports.

These friendlies were planned for the November international window to help the team prepare for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). However, the financial challenges have put the matches in doubt.

Sources reveal that the GFA does not have the required funds, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports has not approved the budget.

The Black Queens, led by coach Nora Häuptle, have not played a match since their friendly against Japan in July. Häuptle had hoped to use these games to assess the team’s readiness for next year’s WAFCON in Morocco.

Ghana recently secured their place in the tournament by defeating Namibia in the qualifiers. They face a challenging group stage, including defending champions South Africa, as well as Tanzania and Mali.

This will be the Black Queens’ first appearance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations since 2018.
