Ghana’s former Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has called for a complete overhaul of sports in the country, including the Black Stars, following their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
For the first time in 20 years, Ghana will miss the prestigious tournament, which will be held in Morocco next year. The Black Stars finished last in Group F with just three points and no wins after six games.
In an interview with Channel One TV, Mr. Afriyie Ankrah expressed his disappointment, highlighting the poor performance and the disheartening behaviour of some fans. “It was very, very sad, particularly when Kudus was about to take the penalty, and the crowd was jeering at him. I was so shocked. I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said.
He emphasised the need for a nationwide effort to reassess and rebuild sports. “It’s time for the whole country to take a closer look at the Black Stars, soccer, and sports in general. We need a reset,” he added.
In the wake of this setback, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has dissolved the Black Stars Management Committee. The GFA’s Executive Council is also set to decide on the future of head coach Otto Addo as part of broader changes to revive the nation’s football fortunes.
