Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister-designate, has clarified his position regarding the potential for further support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), countering previous media reports.
During his appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 13, Dr. Forson asserted that he did not state that the new government would pursue additional IMF funding, even with Ghana currently engaged in a program with the organization.
He elaborated that his remarks were hypothetical and dependent on future circumstances. Dr. Forson highlighted the need for adaptability in steering the country’s economic direction, indicating that seeking extra IMF assistance could be a viable option if the situation demands it.
“What I said was that we could request additional finance if the need arises.”
The incoming finance minister has called on the media to be careful in their reporting of his remarks to prevent any misunderstanding by the public.
His remarks followed previous reports that indicated the new government might seek extra funding from the IMF, raising worries about the management of Ghana’s economy.
