Ghana’s parliament honours boxing legend Clement Ike Quartey Snr

The Parliament of Ghana On Tuesday, December 17, 2024 came together to pay tribute to the late boxing icon, Clement Ike Quartey Snr, during their parliamentary sitting. The atmosphere was filled with reverence as members of Parliament reflected on the significant contributions Quartey made to the nation, particularly in the realm of sports. Wisdom Kobena Woyome, the ranking member of the youth, sports, and culture committee, led the charge in honouring Quartey’s legacy, emphasizing the pride he brought to Ghana through his athletic achievements.

Clement Ike Quartey Snr is celebrated as the first athlete to secure a medal for Ghana at the Olympic Games, a milestone that marked a pivotal moment in the country’s sporting history. His remarkable journey culminated in a silver medal victory in the Light Welterweight category at the 1960 Summer Olympics held in Rome. This achievement not only showcased his exceptional talent but also inspired a generation of athletes in Ghana and beyond.
