John Mahama prioritizes renovation of stadiums over building new ones amid crisis

In an engaging interaction with journalists on Sunday, July 7, 2024, John Mahama, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), addressed a pressing question on the minds of many voters.

As Ghana approaches its general elections in December, Mahama was asked about his plans for addressing the country’s infrastructure needs, particularly concerning the construction of a new stadium. His response was both candid and realistic, reflecting the current economic challenges facing the nation.

Mahama did not shy away from the harsh realities of the situation. “In the current crisis in which we are, I would not stand here and promise that we will build a new stadium,” he stated. This admission underscores the gravity of the economic difficulties that Ghana is grappling with and the necessity of prioritising essential infrastructure over more ambitious projects.

Despite his reluctance to promise a new stadium, Mahama did offer a glimpse of hope through his “Big Push” agenda. “But I’ve said that under the big push, we intend to spend a certain amount of money over five years on providing good infrastructure,” he elaborated.

This plan includes a comprehensive approach to enhancing the country’s infrastructure, covering roads, bridges, agro-industrial parks, and other critical facilities. The “Big Push” aims to create a robust foundation for future development, which could indirectly benefit various sectors, including sports.

Mahama’s strategic vision also leaves room for sports facilities, albeit not as an immediate priority. “That could include sports facilities. And if we make an allocation, then we probably would look at providing such a stadium,” he added.
