June 2024 inflation: Tomatoes, 19 other products record price hikes above 40%

The latest data released by the Ghana Statistical Service indicates that inflation has dropped, with the June figure standing at 22.8%.

The figure represents a 0.3 percentage decrease from the 23.1 percent recorded in May. However, Ghana Statistical Service has identified several items at both national and household levels that may require policy interventions due to significant price hikes.

Data from the service indicates that prices of certain items have also increased compared to the same period in 2023.

Notably, food items such as Okro, green pepper, tomatoes, and other food and non-food items were among the top 20 experiencing notable price increases.

Data from the Ghana Statistical Service indicate that prices of certain items have risen by over 40 percent compared to the same period in 2023.

According to the data, fresh Okro topped the list with a year-on-year inflation of 87.8%, while fresh green pepper ranked second with a year-on-year inflation of 71.0%.

Fresh tomatoes ranked third with a yearly average price change of 67.5% and a monthly price variation of 27.1%.

Nine new entrants include oranges with year-on-year inflation of 55.9%, garlic with a 50.1% price change, avocado pear with a 48.3% year-on-year price change, and cocoyam leaves with a price change of 46.5%.
