NHIA Set to Implement 120% Tariff Increase — CEO Dr Bampoe

National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, The Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, says the Authority is fully prepared to implement a 120 per cent increase in service tariffs once it receives the necessary approvals from the NHIA Board and the Minister for Health.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, November 26, Dr Bampoe revealed that the proposed increment is the outcome of extensive work conducted by an independent panel of experts commissioned to review tariffs in line with Sections 33 and 34 of the National Health Insurance Act. The law requires the annual revision of both medicine tariffs and service tariffs.

“What we are thinking of is that we have done the work, and we think that it should be 120 per cent. We are proposing. It was done by a group of experts,” Dr Bampoe stated.

He further explained that while the medicines tariff review had been completed earlier, the service tariff review initiated in 2022 took longer due to its broad and detailed nature.

“There are two types of reviews we need to do, but this was a really comprehensive one, so they could not finish on time. It is now that they have finished,” he said.

According to Dr Bampoe, the only step left is for the proposal to be evaluated and approved at the statutory level.

“Now it has to go to the Board for them to look at it and give their view on it. It has to go to the Minister of Health to give his assent, and then we will implement it if they all think it is okay.”

The proposed 120% increase is expected to address long-standing concerns from healthcare providers about the rising cost of service delivery and the need for more realistic reimbursement rates under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
