Physics Scholarship Opportunity at University of Sussex in 2025

The University of Sussex is offering a remarkable chance for emerging researchers to engage in pioneering developments in quantum technology. The university is providing a PhD Studentship for 2025 in Magnetic Microscopy with Bose-Einstein Condensates. This is an excellent opportunity for you if you have a strong interest in atomic and quantum physics.

Description of the Sussex Research Group

The research group at the University of Sussex investigates neutral atomic gases, examining their quantum-level properties and interactions. The team employs advanced techniques to create highly sensitive magnetic sensors, which have applications in nanomaterials, electric vehicle battery monitoring, navigation, brain imaging, and beyond.

This research group at Sussex focuses on various innovative projects and collaborations, aiming to advance knowledge and understanding in their field.

This studentship offers a unique chance to engage with the fields of quantum physics, bioengineering, and materials science, providing an essential interdisciplinary experience.

Emphasis of the project

The project encompasses:

  • Employing magnetic microscopy to visualize current flow patterns in nanostructured and biological samples.
  • Enhancing the microscope’s sensitivity for use in 2D sample imaging, materials science, and bio-engineering.
  • Utilizing electromagnetic fields to cool and trap neutral atoms for the creation of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Project Outcomes

You will acquire practical experience in:

  • Quantum technologies (lasers, optics, electronics, and vacuum systems)
  • Atomic physics and materials science.
  • Examining and interpreting current flow patterns in two-dimensional nanostructures.

Eligibility Requirements

To submit your application, you need to:

  • Possess a background in atomic and quantum physics.
  • Applicants can be from the UK or international locations.
  • Possess or anticipate possessing a UK upper second-class degree (or its non-UK equivalent) in physics. A lower second-class degree, when paired with a relevant Master’s degree, is also considered acceptable.

NOTE: Please be aware that international students or EU nationals lacking UK-settled or pre-settled status are required to obtain a student study visa prior to admission.

Studentship Benefits

This esteemed studentship encompasses:

  • Tuition fees are fully covered for three and a half years.
  • An extra £1,650 annually to support research training and travel expenses.
  • A bursary of £19,237 per year (2025) that is tax-free, intended for living expenses.
  • Options for both short-term and long-term travel to enhance your research efforts.

International students must secure a student study visa prior to admission to the studentship. Exchange programs for students
