(man is 'Who?' in Arabic, Aramaic מַן ), Mandaean (מאן), Ethiopic (manu), 'What?' in these dialects being מָה מָא (Ethiopic ment); מָן in the sense of 'What?' must correspond to the later Syriac contracted from מָדֵין Nö^{§ 68} W^{SG 125}).
