Genesis Chapter 4 (Passion Bible)
Now Adam had slept[1] with his wife, and she conceived and bore a son named Cain.[2] She said, “By the grace of Yahweh[3] I have birthed a man!”
Then later, she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel.[4] Abel grew up to be a shepherd, and Cain became a farmer, working the ground.[5]
After some time passed,[6] Cain presented an offering to Yahweh from the produce of the land.
Abel also brought his offering, from among the finest[7] of the firstborn of his flocks. Yahweh was very pleased[8] with Abel and accepted his offering,
but with Cain and his offering, Yahweh was not pleased,[9] making Cain very furious and resentful.[10]
So Yahweh said to Cain,
If you offer what is right, won’t you be accepted?[11]
One day Cain said to his brother, “Let’s go out into the field.”[13] When they arrived at the field, Cain rose and attacked and killed his brother Abel.
Then Yahweh said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?”
Yahweh said, “Listen—the voice of your brother’s blood[15] is crying out to me from the ground! What have you done?
Now you are banished[16] from the land, from the very ground that drank your brother’s blood from your hand![17]
When you try to cultivate the ground it will no longer produce crops[18] for you; and you will be a fugitive, a homeless wanderer!”[19]
Cain said to Yahweh, “My punishment is more than I can bear![20]
Look—you’ve thrown me off the land today, and now I must hide from your presence. As a fugitive and wanderer on the earth, anyone who meets me may choose to kill me!”
Yahweh responded, “Not so! If anyone kills you, I promise the seven-fold[21] vengeance of Cain will be released upon him!” So, Yahweh put an identifying sign[22] on Cain as a warning so that no one would dare kill him.
Then Cain left the presence of Yahweh and journeyed to the Land of Wandering,[23] east of Eden.
Cain slept with his wife and she conceived and bore Enoch.[24] Cain was building a city[25] at the time, so he named it the Village of Enoch, after his son.
Enoch’s son was Irad,[26] and Irad’s son was Mehujael,[27] and Mehujael’s son was Methushael,[28] and Methushael’s son was Lamech.[29]
Lamech married two women, Dawn[30] and Dusk.[31]
Dawn gave birth to Jabal,[32] the first[33] of those who lived in tents and raised livestock.
Jabal’s brother was Jubal,[34] the first of musicians who played instruments.[35]
Dusk gave birth to Tubalcain,[36] the first of blacksmiths who forged all kinds of bronze and iron tools. His sister was Naamah.[37]
Lamech boasted to his wives:[38]
If killing Cain costs seven lives,
Adam slept with his wife again and she bore a son whom she named Seth, meaning “appointed,” for she declared, “God has appointed for me another son[41] to replace Abel, because Cain killed him.”
After many years Seth had a son named Enosh.[42] During his lifetime, people[43] began to worship Yahweh and pray to him.[44]
