Deuteronomy
Chapter 18
(NRSVCE)
Deuteronomy 18
Ready to read
1
The levitical priests, the whole tribe of Levi, shall have no allotment or inheritance within Israel. They may eat the sacrifices that are the LORD’s portion [1]
2
but they shall have no inheritance among the other members of the community; the LORD is their inheritance, as he promised them.
3
This shall be the priests’ due from the people, from those offering a sacrifice, whether an ox or a sheep: they shall give to the priest the shoulder, the two jowls, and the stomach.
4
The first fruits of your grain, your wine, and your oil, as well as the first of the fleece of your sheep, you shall give him.
5
For the LORD your God has chosen Levi [2] out of all your tribes, to stand and minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for all time.
6
If a Levite leaves any of your towns, from wherever he has been residing in Israel, and comes to the place that the LORD will choose (and he may come whenever he wishes),
7
then he may minister in the name of the LORD his God, like all his fellow-Levites who stand to minister there before the LORD.
8
They shall have equal portions to eat, even though they have income from the sale of family possessions. [3]
9
When you come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you, you must not learn to imitate the abhorrent practices of those nations.
10
No one shall be found among you who makes a son or daughter pass through fire, or who practices divination, or is a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer,
11
or one who casts spells, or who consults ghosts or spirits, or who seeks oracles from the dead.
12
For whoever does these things is abhorrent to the LORD; it is because of such abhorrent practices that the LORD your God is driving them out before you.
13
You must remain completely loyal to the LORD your God.
14
Although these nations that you are about to dispossess do give heed to soothsayers and diviners, as for you, the LORD your God does not permit you to do so.
15
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet [4] like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. [5]
16
This is what you requested of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: “If I hear the voice of the LORD my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die.”
17
Then the LORD replied to me: “They are right in what they have said.
18
I will raise up for them a prophet [6] like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, [7] who shall speak to them everything that I command.
19
Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet [8] shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable.
20
But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak — that prophet shall die.”
21
You may say to yourself, “How can we recognize a word that the LORD has not spoken?”
22
If a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD but the thing does not take place or prove true, it is a word that the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; do not be frightened by it.
23
Jesus answered, “If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong. But if I have spoken rightly, why do you strike me?”
24
Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
25
Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him, “You are not also one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.”
26
One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?”
27
Again Peter denied it, and at that moment the cock crowed.
28
Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters. [7] It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, [8] so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover.
29
So Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
30
They answered, “If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.”
31
Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.” The Jews replied, “We are not permitted to put anyone to death.”
32
(This was to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.)
33
Then Pilate entered the headquarters [9] again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34
Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?”
35
Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?”
36
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”
37
Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
38
Pilate asked him, “What is truth?” Jesus Sentenced to Death After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, “I find no case against him.
39
But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover. Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”
40
They shouted in reply, “Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a bandit.
