Jeremiah
Chapter 2
(Passion Bible)
Jeremiah 2
Ready to read
1
Yahweh spoke these words to me:
2
“Go, preach this message[1] publicly for all Jerusalem to hear: ‘Yahweh says to you:
3
Israel, like the firstfruits of my harvest,
4
Jacob’s tribes, listen! Every clan of Israel, listen to the words of Yahweh.
5
He declares to you:
6
They never stopped to ask themselves,
7
“I brought you to this land of abundance
8
The priests did not stop and ask,
9
Therefore I, Yahweh, will bring charges against you once more,
10
“Go off to the Greek islands[15] and investigate for yourselves.
11
Has a nation ever traded in its gods
12
Be appalled, O heavens, and cringe with fear!
13
“My people are guilty of a double sin:
14
“Is Israel a slave? Was he born a slave?
15
His enemies have raged against him,
16
Moreover, Egyptian armies will march from Memphis and Tahpanhes.[23]
17
Israel, you have no one to blame but yourselves!
18
Why, then, would you now go down to Egypt
19
Your own wickedness punishes you.
20
“Long ago, you broke your bond with me and severed ties.[28]
21
I planted you like a special vine[29]
22
Even if you scrubbed yourself with the strongest soap,
23
“How dare you say, ‘I have not defiled myself.
24
or like a wild female donkey
25
Israel, don’t chase after other gods
26
“Just as a thief is ashamed when caught in the act,
27
You have called an idol of wood your ‘father’
28
Now where are all your homemade gods?
29
What right do you have to complain about me?
30
“I’ve wasted my time punishing you
31
“O people of this generation,
32
Does a young woman disregard her engagement ring,
33
How skillfully you pursue your lovers;
34
Your clothes are stained
35
you dare to say, ‘I’m innocent!
36
Look how you cheapen yourself
37
You will turn away from Egypt utterly humiliated,[39]
