Jeremiah
Chapter 20
(Passion Bible)
Jeremiah 20
Ready to read
1
Pashhur[1] son of Immer was a priest and the temple overseer. When he heard what Jeremiah had prophesied, he became angry.
2
So he arrested Jeremiah, beat him,[2] and put him in stocks[3] at the upper Benjamin Gate[4] of Yahweh’s temple.
3
The next morning, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “Pashhur, Yahweh has given you a new name—Terror Everywhere![5]
4
For Yahweh says to you: ‘I am making you a terror[6] to yourself and to all your friends, who will be killed in battle while you look on. I will give all Judah into the hands of the king of Babylon. He will take them captive to Babylon or kill them with the sword.
5
I will give all the wealth of this city—her resources, her prized possessions, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah—into the hands of their enemies, who will seize all the plunder and carry it off to Babylon.
6
You, Pashhur, and all your household will go into captivity as prisoners to Babylon.[7] You will die there and be buried there, you and all your gullible friends to whom you have prophesied falsely.’ ”
7
Yahweh, you pushed[8] me into being a prophet,
8
Whenever I prophesy,
9
When I tell myself,
10
For I heard them whispering behind my back:
11
But Yahweh is a mighty, fearless warrior standing at my side.
12
O Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies,
13
Sing! Sing praises to Yahweh,[12]
14
Cursed be the day on which I was born!
15
Put a curse on the man
16
Let that man be like the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah
17
For he did not kill me before I came from the womb,
18
Why was I even born?
