Jeremiah
Chapter 22
(Passion Bible)
Jeremiah 22
Ready to read
1
Yahweh spoke these words to Jeremiah: “Go to the palace of the king of Judah and give him my word.
2
Say: ‘Listen to the word of Yahweh, king of Judah, who occupies the throne of David, your officials, and people who enter these gates!
3
Yahweh says to you: Be concerned for justice and righteousness. Rescue the one who is robbed from his oppressor. Do not exploit or mistreat the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow. Stop the violence and do not shed the blood of the innocent in this place.
4
For if you fulfill this command, then there will be kings of David’s lineage to pass through the city’s gates. The kings and their officials will be riding in chariots or riding horses and will be accompanied by the people.
5
But I swear by myself as a witness, if you do not obey these commands, then this palace shall become a ruin, declares Yahweh!’ ”
6
Yes, listen to what Yahweh thinks about Judah’s royal palace:
7
I will appoint[1] a wrecking crew to destroy you,
8
“When many foreigners pass by this city and each one asks another, ‘Why did Yahweh do this to such a great city?’
9
the reply will be, ‘Because they forsook the covenant with Yahweh their God and worshiped and served other gods.’ ”
10
Do not weep for King Josiah, who died,
11
For this is what Yahweh has said concerning Shallum[2] son of King Josiah of Judah, who succeeded his father Josiah as king but was led away from here: “He will never return.
12
He will die in the land of his exile, and he will never see his homeland again.”
13
“Doomed is the one who builds his house with unrighteousness,
14
Doomed is the one who says,
15
Does it make you a king just because you build
16
He upheld the rights of the poor and needy—
17
“But your eyes and heart are only interested
18
Therefore, Yahweh says to you, Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah:
19
He will have a donkey’s burial.
20
“Go up to the peaks of Lebanon, you people of Jerusalem, and cry out.
21
I warned you in your prosperous times,
22
Now you will be disgraced and humiliated
23
You, O king,[8] although you feel safely nested there
24
Yahweh declares, “As surely as I am the living God, listen, O King Jehoiachin[9] son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah. Even if you were the royal signet ring I wear on my right hand,[10] I would still pull you from my finger.
25
I will hand you over to the power of those who seek your life, into the hands of those you dread—King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and the Babylonians.[11]
26
I will hurl you and the mother who bore you into a foreign land, where neither of you were born and where both of you will die.
27
Your people will be in exile and will not return to the land to which they yearn to come back.[12]
28
“Is this man Coniah[13] now thrown away
29
Land of Judah! My land! My land![14]
