Jeremiah Chapter 4 (Passion Bible)
1 “I, Yahweh, say to Israel:
2 If you make a promise in my name,
3 Yahweh says to the people of Judah and Jerusalem:
4 Listen, people of Judah and Jerusalem.
5 Yahweh says:
6 Set up a signal to run to Zion.
7 A nation-wrecker[6] is on the prowl
8 Therefore, put on sackcloth, lament, and wail,
9 Yahweh has declared, “In that day, the courage of the king will melt away. The hearts of his officials will tremble. The priests will be overcome with fear, and the prophets horrified.”
10 In response to all this I said: “O Lord Yahweh, you have completely deceived Jerusalem and these people![7] You promised peace, yet even now, the blade of the sword threatens our lives.”[8]
11 At that time it will be said to the people and to Jerusalem: “A blazing[9] wind from the barren desert heights will blow upon my dear people,[10] not a gentle wind to winnow or sift out—
12 I am sending a wind much stronger than that. Now, I will bring charges against them.”
13 Look, as a storm cloud in the sky, he[11] arises,
14 Jerusalem, wash the evil from your heart
15 I hear a shout warning of disaster from the territory of Dan[13]
16 “Warn the nations of what is coming!
17 The enemies surround Judah and Jerusalem
18 “You have brought this on yourself by your deeds and your lifestyle.
19 With gut-wrenching pain deep in my soul,
20 A chain of disasters, one after another.
21 How long must I see their battle flags
22 “My people are foolish
23 I looked at the earth,
24 I looked at the mountains and saw them trembling,
25 I looked for a human,
26 I looked at the once fruitful land,
27 “For I, Yahweh, have spoken:
28 This is why the earth will mourn,
29 When they hear the approach of the horsemen and archers,
30 And you, desolate Zion,
31 I heard a cry of a woman gasping in labor pains;
