Jeremiah
Chapter 49
(Passion Bible)
Jeremiah 49
Ready to read
1
Yahweh says to the Ammonites:[1]
2
Therefore, I say to you,
3
Weep and wail, Heshbon, for Ai has been destroyed!
4
Why do you glory in your ebbing strength,
5
Look, I will bring terror upon you,”
6
But I affirm to you,
7
Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, says to Edom:[4]
8
People of Dedan,[5] turn and run!
9
People who harvest grapes
10
However, I have taken everything from Esau’s descendants.
11
‘Leave your orphans, I’ll take care of them;
12
For Yahweh says, “Even those nations that don’t deserve to be punished must drink from the cup filled with my anger. So how do you hope to escape? You will not go unpunished but will certainly have to drink from that same cup.
13
For I have sworn by my great name, Yahweh, that your capital city of Bozrah and all its surrounding villages will become nothing but desert ruins. Bozrah will be a laughingstock, a curse, and an object of horror forever.”
14
I have received a word from Yahweh.
15
“Behold, I will make you the least of nations;
16
Your proud heart has deceived you.
17
“I will make Edom an object of horror and astonishment;[8] everyone who passes by it will be appalled and will make insulting remarks because of all its disasters!
18
I, Yahweh, say to you: As Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns were destroyed and no one will live there again, not one person will ever settle in Edom again.
19
“Behold, just as a lion suddenly comes out of the thickets of the Jordan[9]
20
So now listen to the plans
21
The earth will shudder at the sound of their downfall
22
Look, an enemy[12] will swoop down on Bozrah
23
Yahweh says to Damascus:[13]
24
The people of Damascus are in a panic.
25
You were once famous, and I was pleased with you,
26
Nevertheless, I, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, say to you:
27
I will light a fire inside the walls of Damascus,
28
Yahweh says to the tribe of Kedar and the areas controlled by Hazor,[18] all conquered by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon:
29
Capture their tents, flocks,
30
Yahweh says to the people of Hazor:
31
“Rise up! March on an unsuspecting people
32
Take all their camels and many sheep
33
Hazor will become desolate, the haunt of jackals,
34
In the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, Yahweh, Commander of Angel Armies, gave me a word for the land of Elam.[21]
35
36
I will bring storms of judgment from everywhere
37
Elamites! I will shatter your confidence before your enemies,
38
Then I, Yahweh, will destroy your kings and leaders
39
Then later on, I will bring your captives back,”
