Jeremiah
Chapter 5
(Passion Bible)
Jeremiah 5
Ready to read
1
“Roam the streets of Jerusalem;
2
Though they take an oath, saying,
3
Yahweh, your eyes search for truth.
4
I thought, “These poor people are senseless,
5
Let me go to the people in power,
6
Therefore, a lion from the forest will attack them,
7
“On what basis can I forgive you?
8
They’re like well-fed stallions lusting for mares;
9
Because of these things,
10
“Here is what I, Yahweh, have decreed:
11
12
They have lied about Yahweh, saying,
13
The prophets are full of hot air,
14
Therefore, because the people have spoken these lies,
15
I, Yahweh, say to the people of Israel:
16
The quivers of her mighty warriors
17
They will devour your harvest and your food.
18
“Yet even then,” Yahweh said to me, “I will not completely eliminate you.
19
And when people ask you, ‘Why did Yahweh our God bring this tragedy upon us?’ You will answer, ‘As you have forsaken Yahweh and served foreign gods in your land, so you will serve strangers in a foreign land.’
20
“Declare this to the descendants of Jacob and spread it throughout Judah:
21
‘Pay attention, you foolish and senseless people.[5]
22
I, Yahweh, am speaking to you.
23
But these people have stubborn, rebellious hearts.
24
They never say in their heart,
25
The guilt of your sins has upset nature’s order
26
“Lurking among my people are wicked criminals.
27
Like cages full of captured birds,
28
fat and prosperous.
29
I, Yahweh, promise to hold them accountable for these things.
30
“A shocking and horrible thing has happened in the land.
31
The prophets prophesy lies,[13]
