¹ How lonely sits the city

² She is weeping bitterly[2] through the night,

³ Judah’s people have gone into exile

⁴ The empty roads to Zion mourn,

⁵ Her foes have the upper hand

⁶ All the splendor has departed

⁷ In her days of wandering and affliction,

⁸ Jerusalem has committed a horrible sin

⁹ Her filth stains her skirts—

¹⁰ The enemy has seized

¹¹ Everyone is groaning,

¹² “None who passes by

¹³ “From on high, he sent a fire deep in my bones,[10]

¹⁴ “Yahweh took my sins in his hands

¹⁵ “The Lord has despised and rejected

¹⁶ “This is why I weep bitterly,

¹⁷ Zion stretches out her hands for help,

¹⁸ “Yahweh is just to judge,

¹⁹ “I called to my lovers,

²⁰ “Yahweh, can’t you see I’m in deep trouble?

²¹ “They have heard my groans,

²² “Let all their wickedness condemn them.
