Lamentations
Chapter 3
(Passion Bible)
Lamentations 3
Ready to read
1
I[1] am the man[2] acquainted with misery
2
He has shepherded me
3
He laid a heavy hand on me,
4
He has made my skin and my flesh waste away;
5
He has besieged and encircled me with a wall
6
He has made me sit in darkness[6]
7
He has walled me in with no way out
8
Even when I cry for help,
9
He has made my paths a maze
10
He has become to me like a bear ready to pounce
11
He dragged me away, tore me to pieces,
12
He has drawn back his bowstring
13
He shot his arrows deep into my heart,[10]
14
Everyone has made me an object of ridicule;[12]
15
He has given me my fill of bitterness
16
He has ground my teeth with gravel
17
You have snatched peace from my soul;[14]
18
I thought to myself, “My endurance has evaporated;
19
I remember wandering around in misery,[16]
20
Whenever I ponder this,
21
Yet there is one ray of hope
22
Yahweh’s tender mercies[18] have no end,
23
New, fresh mercies greet me with every sunrise.[20]
24
I tell my soul, “Yahweh is my abundant portion. I need nothing more.
25
Yahweh is always good to all who trust in him,[21]
26
It is always good to hope,
27
It is always good to learn patience and humility[22]
28
If your burden is heavy and hard to bear,
29
Bow low in humble submission,[24]
30
Offer a cheek to the one who would strike you,[25]
31
For the Lord will not
32
If he causes grief, he will show compassion
33
The Lord takes no delight
34
To trample underfoot
35
to violate human rights
36
to cheat someone of justice—
37
Who can make anything happen
38
Is it not from the decree of the Most High
39
Why, then, should anyone complain
40
Let us examine our path, ponder our ways,
41
Let us pray, offering up our hearts in our hands
42
“We have sinned and rebelled,
43
“You have blanketed us with your anger[30] and then pursued us,
44
You shrouded yourself in a cloud
45
You have reduced us to rubbish;
46
“Our enemies are a choir
47
Panic and pitfall have been our portion;
48
My eyes stream with torrents of tears
49
My eyes will weep without stopping,
50
until Yahweh looks down from heaven
51
My heart is so grieved[32]
52
My enemies, who hate me for no reason,
53
They buried me alive in a pit
54
Water rose over my head;
55
I called on your name, Yahweh,
56
You have heard me cry out to you:
57
You drew near when I called to you.[34]
58
Lord, like a lawyer you contended for my cause;
59
Yahweh, you have seen the wrong done to me;
60
You have seen their malice
61
You have heard their mockery, Yahweh,
62
They murmur and whisper against me
63
See, from morning to night,[35]
64
Yahweh, repay them!
65
Give them dullness of heart[36]
66
Pursue them with anger and destroy them
