Lamentations Chapter 5 (Passion Bible)
Yahweh[1], remember all that we’ve endured;
Our inheritance[2] has passed to strangers,
We have no fathers; we are orphans,
We have to pay for drinking water,
Our pursuers are breathing down our necks;
We made a pact with Egypt and Assyria
Our ancestors sinned, and they are no more;
Slaves rule over us;[4]
We risk our lives to earn our bread
Our skin is scorched
Our enemies violated Zion’s women
Our leaders have been taken and hanged;
Young men are forced into menial labor,[5]
The elders no longer give their advice;[6]
Joy has vanished from our hearts;
Our joyful celebrations are over.[7]
For this is why our hearts are sick
because Mount Zion lies desolate
Yet you, Yahweh, reign forever!
Have you forgotten us forever?
Draw us back to yourself, Yahweh; let us come back to you!
Have you utterly rejected us?
