150 police officers equipped for effective discharge of duties at mining sites

The Ghana Chamber of Mines has called on personnel of the Ghana Police Service deployed to mining companies to execute their duties with professionalism, in accordance with the code of ethics of the Service, to benefit all stakeholders in Ghana.

Director of Analysis, Research and Finance of the Chamber, this professional conduct is essential to avoid violating the fundamental human rights of the community members in the areas where these mining companies operate.

Mr. Nyarko made this call during an interview with the media at a training workshop organised by the Chamber for 150 police personnel at the Ghana Police Command and Staff College in Winneba.

He explained that the training is part of their collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, whose personnel help protect assets at various mining companies.

The Chamber periodically organises such training sessions to improve service delivery to the mining industry and the country as a whole.

“The reason we brought a team comprising the Chamber’s Legal Person, Madam Shaila Minkah Premo, and some operational officers from the mines led by the chairman of the Chamber Security Committee,” he said.

He noted that Edwin Asare from Gold Fields Ghana Limited; Theresa Abrema Obosu, Senior Officer Administration, Training and Project of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, and Martin Baah Ahwireng, Security Manager of Perseus Mining Company Limited, were the facilitators.

The facilitators educated the participants on the Minerals and Mining Act—what Public Security Officers need to know, ethical considerations in mining, voluntary principles on security and human rights, and security threats in mining operations and response, among other topics.

They urged the police personnel to cooperate with the existing security personnel in the various mining companies, foster a peaceful mining environment, and report any challenges to the authorities for redress.

DSP Mose Gyan Mpettey, Staff Officer Operations, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police and the Police Administration, thanked the organisers of the training and assured that the participants would make good use of the knowledge and skills they had gained to maintain order in the various mining areas.
