At the 30th National Delegates Conference of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, held at Ho in the Volta region, the call was made for Christians in the country to take active roles in protecting the environment. The Ho East Synod Moderator of the church, Reverend George Akuamoah-Boateng, urged Ghanaians to commemorate significant life events by planting trees.
This initiative, he emphasized, would serve as a tangible commitment to environmental stewardship to God and a lasting legacy for future generations. The conference was on the theme “Care for God’s Creation, the Mission of the Church, the Role of Presbyters.”
The 30th National Delegates Conference brought together delegates from all the 16 presbytries of the church across the country. The conference among other things enabled the delegates to take stock of their mandates towards the growth of the various presbytries in particular and the church in general.
The theme for the Conference “Care for God’s Creation, the Mission of the Church, the Role of Presbyters,” seeks to convey a message about the integral role of environmental stewardship within the Christian faith.
The National President of the Presbyters’ Union of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, Engineer Dr. Anthony Mawutor Atsu, highlighted the critical need for the preservation of Ghana’s land and vegetation cover. “The Theme for this year’s conference “Care
for God’s Creation, the Mission of the Church, the Role of Presbyters” (Gen.2:15,
Rom.8, John.15:16), could not be more appropriate than this, since our
attitudes and behaviours are destroying the Creation of God instead of caring for it. Especially in this era when galamsey is destroying our lands and water bodies.”, he said.
The Ho East Synod Moderator of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, Reverend George Akuamoah-Boateng, said caring for God’s creation is a fundamental aspect of the Christian mission and called on Christians to be advocates for environmental conservation. “Let us stop the raping of our seas, river bodies, deforestation so much left, right, center. We should become advocates to restore God’s earth. If we don’t take care of God’s creation, eventually we also as humanity will become extinct.”, he remarked.
The Coordinating Director at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, Mr Augustus Awity, said caring for God’s creation is a mandatory and integral part of a Christian’s stewardship and service to God. “we must recognize the interconnectedness of all creations and work towards it sustainability in justice and compassion.”, he said.
Discussions and resolutions from the conference is thus expected to inspire action and foster a culture of environmental responsibility within the church and the broader Ghanaian community.
