Akwamu residents issue two-week ultimatum to govt over lack of projects

Residents of Akwamu in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region have issued a two-week ultimatum to the government to address some pertinent issues in the area.

The residents who bemoaned the alleged neglect by successive governments over the weekend took to the streets to demonstrate.

The residents, young and old clad in red and black apparel chanted war songs as they moved from New Akrade to Atimpoku roundabout to drum home their displeasure over what they termed as the neglect of Akwamu by successive governments.

Traditional leaders who took part in the peaceful demonstration dubbed ” Walking for Attention” poured libation to invoke the blessings of the gods on the exercise which was heavily supervised by the Akosombo police command with support from the Odumase Division.

The angry residents paraded placards with inscriptions such as ‘VRA give employment to people of Akwamu’, and ‘Stop the sale of Akwamu lands’,’ Akwamu deserve better’ among others.

The convenor Emmanuel Ansah Amadi addressing the gathering noted the significance of the Akwamu area to the country and laid their concerns bare.

“The people of Akwamu have shown unwavering generosity and patriotism, offering their lands for the construction of critical infrastructure that benefits the entire nation. The Akosombo Dam, a project that powers homes and industries across Ghana and outside the border of our nation Ghana stands on the land given by the Akwamu people.

“The Adome Bridge, a vital link connecting our regions, also stands on land provided by our community. Despite these significant contributions, the Akwamu people find themselves sidelined, watching as their lands are continuously taken and their contributions ignored.

“The Akwamu people are not asking for special treatment; we are asking for fairness, respect, and acknowledgement of our pivotal role in the nation’s progress. We have given much, and it is only right that our needs and rights are addressed with the seriousness they deserve.”

According to the group, the government has yet to respond to all the 13 letters written to them.

Lead convenor Dr Nana Kwame Acheampong Kwakye who raised concerns about the alleged naming of the Tema Mpakadan Railway Station to Juapong Station indicated that the people of Akwamu will use all means possible to resist that move.

“Renaming the railway station to reflect the true heritage of the land is a necessary first step. Furthermore, a broader recognition and respect for the Akwamu people’s contributions must be established.”

The group after addressing the gathering presented a petition of their grievances to the District Chief Executive for the area.

District Chief Executive of Asuogyaman Mavis Akonnor who received the petition on behalf of the government commended the leadership of the demonstration for ensuring a peaceful one and assured them to channel their concerns to the appropriate quarters for redress.
