Borteyman Sports Complex given out for church service

The $145 million Borteyman Sports Complex has started to host church services, just three months after it hosted the 2023 African Games.

The multipurpose building was finished in time for the earlier this year games, which took place in Ghana.

In a widely shared video on the social networking platform X (formerly known as Twitter), attendees of a church service were visible within one of the multipurpose building’s domes.

On social media, the video has incited fury and sparked concerns about the facility’s upkeep.

According to Joy Sports’ investigation, Christ Embassy-Legon Central’s leadership led the church service despite not having the necessary authorization to do so.

The National Sports Authority (NSA) was contacted by the leadership of the University of Ghana Students Representative Council (SRC) and the church, according to Joy Sports sources, to request permission to bring a group of students on a field trip to the facility. After the games, the facility has turned into a tourist attraction.

Joy Sports has learned that, to the surprise of the authorities, a religious service was subsequently held within the facility, shocking NSA officials.

The decision to transform the vacation into a church event apparently infuriated other non-Christian students who were on this so-called “SRC Fun Trip.”

The incident occurred on June 1, 2024, and the SRC responded with an apologetic letter, which Joy Sports has seen.

The NSA responded to Joy Sports’ request for comment by stating that they had known about the situation from the start and were looking into it.

In addition to a 1,000-seat swimming pool, the Borteyman Sports Complex has a multifunctional sports hall that can hold 1,000 spectators for a variety of games, including weightlifting, basketball, badminton, netball, and table tennis.

In addition, there’s a five-court tennis complex, 500-seat temporary dome, judo, karate, taekwondo, arm wrestling, and handball.
