Ghana’s Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has called on the military to maintain strict political neutrality before, during, and after the December 2024 elections, emphasising their primary responsibility to protect the nation’s integrity.
Speaking at the Republic Day lecture hosted by the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Mr Nitiwul stressed the crucial role of the military in safeguarding democracy and cautioned against any partisan involvement.
“The military is the last bastion of our country’s hope,” the minister declared.
He warned that if the armed forces lose public trust by aligning with a political party, it could undermine the very foundation of democracy.
The lecture, featuring notable speakers such as Former National Security Minister Francis Poku and Prof. Kwasi Aning, discussed the essential role of military impartiality in ensuring national security and stability.
Other distinguished guests, including Madam Josephine Nkrumah, echoed the Minister’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of the military operating independently of political influence to effectively carry out its duties.
This event marks the beginning of a series of public lectures organised by the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, aimed at sparking discussions on critical national security issues in the coming months.
