Parliament reschedules vetting of Supreme Court nominees to August 13

The minority members on the newly constituted Appointments Committee of Ghana’s Parliament aborted a hurriedly planned vetting of two additional Supreme Court Judge nominees scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

Due to the concerns raised and non-negotiable stance taken by the minority members on the Appointments Committee of Parliament, the vetting of two additional Supreme Court Judge nominees was rescheduled to August 13, 2024.

This comes after the Vice chairperson of the committee suspended its sitting on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, for a leadership engagement to iron out their differences.

The minority’s opposition to the vetting of the two nominees, Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong and Justice Sophia Bernasko Essah, was on the grounds of lack of advertisement and short notice.

The Vice Chairperson of the Appointments Committee, Madam Patricia Appiagyei, addressed journalists on the matter.

“This morning, we were billed to vet the two (2) nominees from the presidency to the Supreme Court, and, unfortunately, we didn’t have a good understanding of the procedures that we needed to adapt to ensure that we could make them successful.

In the turn of events, we decided to suspend the sitting, and after suspension…It’s a pleasure to mention that after conferring with each other, we’ve built consensus, and we have rescheduled the vetting date from today to 13th August 2024.

We believe that on that day when we invite you, you are all going to be present,” she stated.
