The Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, will launch the maiden Democracy Cup on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at the Justice D.F. Annan Auditorium at Parliament House in Accra.

The Democracy Cup has been instituted by Parliament as part of activities commemorating 30 years of uninterrupted parliamentary democracy in Ghana, which began last year under the theme, “30 Years of Parliamentary Democracy Under the 4th Republic: The Journey Thus Far”.

According to the organisers, the Democracy Cup series is intended to bring sports enthusiasts from various parts of the country together to not only participate in sporting activities but, more importantly, for Parliament to use football as a vehicle for engaging with citizens and encouraging wider participation in the legislative process.

The struggling Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko will vie for the maiden edition of the competition on Friday, July 5, 2024, at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The winner of the match between the two premier league sides will play against United States-based club, DC United in Washington later in the year.

A statement issued by the Coordinator of the Democracy Cup Series, disclosed that the launch will be attended by Members of Parliament, the media, and officials of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), and other stakeholders.

There will also be a special curtain-raiser between Members of Parliament and former Black Stars players.

Other activities earmarked to commemorate the anniversary include mock parliamentary sittings and debates, peace walks, and fun games.
