Justice Sophia Roseta Oduokuwa Bernasko Essah, one of the two new nominees President Akufo-Addo has appointed to Ghana’s apex court, the Supreme Court (SC) is advocating for an expansion of the current legal education system.
According to there is a pressing need to open up the legal educational system accommodate as many people as possible who want to pursue a career in law.
Answering questions during her vetting in Parliament on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, Justice Essah explained that the exponential growth of Ghana’s democracy demands for an expansion its legal education sector to accommodate as many people as possible to meet the demands for legal services.
“I think that as a country, it is important that we open up legal education as much as we can because we are a growing democracy. It is important that we make legal education available to as many people as possible and we should aim for the best practices.” She reiterated
The nominee also acknowledged that there is a need for legal reforms to address any shortcomings in the current system so as to ensure best practices are met.
Justice Essah said the reforms may further be explored by academics in the legal field.
“In order to speak about the reforms, I will have to then specify what the shortcomings are and what amounts to best practices and I think that is something that I may be unable to do sitting here but the experts in the academic area would be the best placed to look at the best option for legal education in this country.”
