POSITION: Head of Basic Medical Sciences

Central University is seeking a Head of Basic Medical Sciences to join our Tema Miotso Campus. Your Mission

You will take responsibility for providing academic and administrative leadership to the department, setting vision and priorities. Your role includes offering teaching and supervisory services to medical students, ensuring they master foundational sciences. You will fulfill all other obligations for an academic senior member, including research, publication, and service to the university. Additionally, you will execute any other role assigned by the Dean or Vice Chancellor, contributing to institutional goals.

Key Responsibilities

Your role spans academic leadership, teaching, supervision, research, and administration. Here is what you will tackle:

Academic Leadership

• You will provide academic leadership to the department, guiding curriculum development and programme review.
• Ensuring teaching quality, assessment standards, and accreditation compliance.

Administrative Leadership

• You will provide administrative leadership, managing faculty, staff, and departmental resources.
• Preparing budgets, schedules, and reports for the Dean.

Teaching

• You will offer teaching services to medical students in Anatomy, Physiology, or Medical Biochemistry, depending on your specialization.
• Then, Delivering lectures, leading tutorials, and facilitating laboratory sessions.

Supervision

• You will offer supervisory services to medical students, guiding research projects, dissertations, or clinical correlations.
• Mentoring students through academic challenges and career planning.

Academic Senior Member Obligations

• You will fulfill all obligations for an academic senior member, including conducting research, publishing in peer reviewed journals, and serving on university committees.
• Also, Participating in faculty development and accreditation reviews.

Executive Roles

• You will execute any other role assigned by the Dean or Vice Chancellor, from strategic planning to representing the university externally.

What You Bring to the Role

Rank & Qualification

• At least the rank of Senior Lecturer from a recognised tertiary institution.
• A PhD or terminal degree in Anatomy, Physiology, or Medical Biochemistry.

Experience

• Previous experience in similar leadership roles gives you an advantage, such as serving as a Department Head, Programme Coordinator, or Dean.

Skills & Personal Attributes

• Strong academic credentials with a track record of research and publication.
• Leadership skills to motivate faculty, manage resources, and resolve conflicts.
• Communication skills for interacting with students, faculty, administration, and external stakeholders.
• Organizational skills to manage budgets, schedules, and accreditation requirements.
• Mentoring mindset to guide junior faculty and medical students.
• Strategic: You plan curriculum and resource allocation for long term programme health.
• Decisive: You make tough calls on faculty assignments, student progression, or resource allocation.
• Collaborative: You work well with the Dean, Vice Chancellor, other department heads, and clinical faculty.
• Student centered: You prioritize medical student success in foundational sciences.
