Germany KWI International Fellowships 2027

The Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen now accepts applications for its International Fellowships 2027. This six-month research programme offers early-career postdoctoral scholars in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences a unique opportunity to advance their work within a vibrant academic community. Selected fellows will join KWI from April 1 to September 30, 2027, receiving substantial support to complete their projects.

Researchers from anywhere in the world can apply, provided they meet the career-stage requirements. Successful candidates will receive a monthly pre-tax allowance of €3,000, possible partial reimbursement for travel costs, office space, and comprehensive institutional support. The application deadline falls on August 17, 2026.

Fellowship Benefits

Your fellowship package includes:

• €3,000 monthly allowance before tax

Eligibility Requirements

Prospective applicants must hold a completed PhD in the humanities or social sciences with no more than six years of postdoctoral experience. For this call, candidates should have completed their doctorate in 2021 or later.

Core requirements include:

• Individual applications only (no groups or teams)
• Strong command of English
• Availability for the full six-month period
• Physical presence at KWI for at least three days weekly

Researchers of all nationalities may apply. German nationals qualify only if currently employed at an international institution. Career breaks, including care-related interruptions or time as a scholar at risk, can be explained in your cover letter and will receive consideration during eligibility assessment. German language skills are not required.

Application Guidelines

Your proposal must clearly connect your planned project with KWI’s programme while specifying what you will achieve during the six-month residence. Furthermore, you should demonstrate how the fellowship will advance your research and career development.

Fellows must attend the KWI Colloquium, lectures, conferences, and reading groups. They should contribute to the KWI Blog, complete entry and exit interviews, and acknowledge KWI in publications resulting from the fellowship. Teaching is not required, allowing you to focus entirely on your research.
