NASA Ames STEM Engagement Internship 2027 in USA

NASA invites students to apply for its Ames STEM Engagement and Mission Experience Internship, offering a unique opportunity to explore one of NASA’s major research centers from a center-wide perspective rather than a single technical discipline. Based at NASA Ames Research Center in California, this fully on-site internship welcomes students from diverse academic backgrounds, including STEM, education, communications, business, and digital media.

What the Internship Offers

Selected interns work with the NASA Ames Office of STEM Engagement (OSTEM), contributing to activities that connect students and mentors with NASA’s people, facilities, research, and career pathways. The program provides exposure to:

  • NASA research programs, scientists, engineers, and mission-support activities
  • Behind-the-scenes facility tours and educational experiences
  • STEM engagement events, student programs, and special initiatives
  • Career pathways across scientific, technical, and operational fields

Interns help coordinate tours, organize STEM events, translate technical information for student audiences, and develop educational resources. The role emphasizes communication, organization, collaboration, and curiosity, making it suitable for students exploring how different disciplines contribute to NASA’s mission.

Eligibility Requirements

NASA’s current OSTEM requirements include:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Enrollment at a U.S. Department of Education accredited college or university
  • At least 16 years old at the time of application
  • Pursuit of a course of study aligned with NASA’s needs

The internship accepts both full-time and part-time arrangements, though the position is fully on-site at NASA Ames. Applicants should indicate their preferred schedule in their application.

Practical Considerations

NASA states that most OSTEM interns receive a stipend based on academic level and session duration. However, interns arrange and pay for their own housing. Selected candidates should budget for local living expenses, transportation, and food not covered by the stipend.

How to Apply

Submit your application through NASA’s internship system using Project ID 025677. NASA offers three internship sessions annually. For Spring 2027, the deadline is September 14, 2026. Summer 2027 applications close on February 26, 2027. Given the competitive nature of this opportunity, prepare your application early and verify the current project listing for session-specific details.
