POSITION: Investigations Specialist

The Internal Audit and Investigations Group (IAIG) at UNOPS is seeking an Investigations Specialist to join our team. If you hold an advanced university degree in law, accounting, or a related field, bring at least five years of progressively responsible experience in criminal or administrative investigations, and want to work on cases involving fraud, corruption, harassment, and sexual exploitation and abuse, this role offers the perfect opportunity to make a significant impact on organizational integrity and reputation.

As an Investigations Specialist, you will not simply review files; you will lead complex investigations, collaborate with key stakeholders, and produce findings that shape organizational action.

Your Mission

You will take responsibility for participating in complex investigations of alleged misconduct. Your focus will span investigation planning, evidence gathering, witness interviewing, report preparation, stakeholder collaboration, policy development, and training delivery. Your ability to work methodically, analyze evidence objectively, and write clear findings will ensure every investigation meets the highest standards of impartiality and due process.

Key Responsibilities

Your role spans investigation planning, evidence analysis, witness interviews, report writing, stakeholder collaboration, policy updates, training, and travel. Here is what you will tackle:

Investigation Planning & Execution

• You will plan and conduct initial reviews and full investigations of alleged misconduct, deciding which investigative tools to employ.
• Leading the preparation of proposed work plans for review and approval by IAIG keeps investigations focused and timely.

Evidence Gathering & Analysis

• You will gather, seize, and analyze relevant evidence, whether documentary, physical, electronic, or otherwise.
• Connecting disparate pieces of evidence into a coherent narrative requires analytical rigor and attention to detail.

Witness Interviews

• You will interview witnesses, victims, and subjects, using interpreters as required, in accordance with accepted best practices.
• Ensuring reliable information while according due process protects the rights of all parties.

Report Preparation

• You will prepare a detailed report at the completion of each assignment, setting forth findings, supporting evidence, analysis, evaluation, and recommendations for next steps.
• Clear, persuasive report writing translates investigative work into actionable organizational decisions.

Stakeholder Collaboration

• You will work collaboratively with key stakeholders, both internally with other UNOPS units and externally with donors and partners.
• Building trust across functions ensures your findings receive proper attention.

Policy & Procedural Development

• You will contribute to updating policies, procedures, systems, and best practices that support the planning, conduct, evidence collection, report writing, and follow up of initial reviews and full investigations.
• Improving the system benefits every investigator who comes after you.

Training & Awareness

• You will participate in awareness and training activities on the prevention, detection, and reporting of fraud and corruption in UNOPS.
• Preventing misconduct is just as important as investigating it.

Travel

• You will travel internationally to UNOPS offices, including field missions, as cases require. Such travel may include missions to hardship duty stations.

Working Hours Requirement

To facilitate close collaboration with the HQ team, you must be available for at least three hours per day during working hours (Copenhagen time).

What You Bring to the Role

We are looking for a candidate with the right education, experience, and competencies. Here is what you need:

Education Requirements

• An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, accounting, or a related area.
• A first level university degree combined with an additional two years of experience in conducting criminal or administrative investigations as an investigator (in addition to the five years of investigation experience required below) may substitute for the Master’s degree.

Experience Requirements

• Required: At least five years of progressively responsible experience in professional investigatory work, law enforcement or criminal investigations, or related fields with a Master’s degree.
• Desired: Experience with UN policies, procedures, and operations gives you a distinct advantage.

• Interviewing skills for drawing out truthful accounts while respecting due process.
