POSITION: Gender Officer 

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is seeking a Gender Officer to join our Regional Office for Africa (RAF) in Accra, Ghana. If you hold an advanced university degree in social sciences, gender studies, or a related field, bring seven years of relevant experience, and are ready to lead gender transformative programming across the region, this role offers the opportunity to shape policies and programmes that eliminate hunger and poverty.

Why FAO?

The Regional Office for Africa (RAF) leads FAO’s response to regional priorities for food security, agriculture, and rural development. We take a multidisciplinary approach to programmes, identify priority areas of action, and collaborate with headquarters divisions to implement FAO’s strategic response. RAF also advises on incorporating regional priorities into the Organization’s Programme of Work and Budget. Additionally, we support regional policy dialogues, facilitate partnerships, and drive capacity development and resource mobilization across Africa.

Your Mission: Integrate and Institutionalize Gender Equality

You will contribute to the implementation of the FAO Strategic Framework and the Gender Equality Policy, aiming to achieve equality between women and men in sustainable agricultural production and rural development. Your technical focus spans gender equality in food security, nutrition, natural resource management, value chains, data collection, disaster risk reduction, climate smart agriculture, women’s land rights, and social protection.

Key Functions

You will plan and lead multidisciplinary teams, develop technical frameworks, design socio economic research, respond to policy requests, promote international cooperation, coordinate capacity development, and participate in resource mobilization. Here is what you will tackle:

Policy Analysis & Research

  • You will undertake policy analysis and research on effective ways to address gender inequalities while promoting women’s empowerment in agriculture, food security, and nutrition.
  • Designing and conducting gender and socio economic research supports the development of technical standards, innovative tools, and flagship publications.

Gender Transformative Programming

  • You will lead the integration and institutionalization of gender transformative programming across RAF’s strategic priorities and field programmes.
  • Ensuring all policies and programmes supporting FAO’s gender equality policy reach implementation in the region’s field programmes.

Government & Regional Support

  • You will support governments and regional organizations to formulate and implement gender sensitive agriculture, rural development, and food security policies and programmes, including for countries facing protracted crises or natural disaster risks.

Knowledge Products & Capacity Development

  • You will produce knowledge products and capacity development materials while implementing learning events that enhance skills for FAO staff and Member States.
  • Organizing and preparing international meetings, workshops, learning events, and policy dialogues influences global debates.

Accountability & Coordination

  • You will implement gender accountability mechanisms including periodic gender audits and performance reviews to ensure delivery of gender related results across country offices and regional initiatives.
  • Acting as regional gender focal point, you will coordinate a regional Gender Focal Point network and strengthen capacity of professional staff in decentralized offices.

Partnerships & Resource Mobilization

  • You will represent RAF at international and inter governmental meetings, advocating strategic partnerships, best practices, and increased policy dialogue.
  • Leading and participating in resource mobilization activities aligns with corporate strategy.

What You Bring to the Role

Minimum Requirements

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in social sciences, rural sociology, gender studies, rural development, social anthropology, agricultural economics, or other relevant social sciences.
  • Seven years of relevant experience in socio economic analysis, policy formulation, and capacity building related to gender equality and women’s empowerment in development and humanitarian contexts.
  • Working knowledge (proficiency level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions.
  • Experience in the African region gives you a distinct asset.
  • Extent and relevance of experience and knowledge related to food security, nutrition, agriculture, rural development, rural poverty, and gender.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in quantitative and qualitative socio economic analysis.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in policy analysis, formulation, monitoring, and evaluation in gender equality and social policies within development and humanitarian contexts.
  • Extent and relevance of experience providing technical support to governments in formulating and implementing gender sensitive agriculture, rural development, and food security policies and programmes.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in capacity development and organizing awareness raising and training activities.
  • Ability to mobilize resources.
  • Working knowledge (proficiency level C) of French is considered an asset.
  • Work experience with FAO or other UN agencies on gender issues is an asset.

Reporting Lines

You will report to the Deputy Regional Representative, RAF.

Location: This position is based in Accra, Ghana.
