DON’T CONDEMN THE INNOCENT

Scripture Reading: Psalm 15

He who does not put out his money at usury, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be moved. Psalm 15:5

Most of the things we do that make us experience God’s presence have to do with the way we deal with people. The Lord judges our attitudes towards people as if we were relating to Him. When we lie to people, it is as if we are lying to the Lord.

Here are two things the Lord does not want us to do:

Don’t exploit the needy.

Israelites were forbidden to take advantage of people when they were going through hard times. In ancient Israel, borrowing money was the last thing people would do if they were in need. Those who needed to borrow were in a desperate situation, usually on the verge of being sold into slavery to satisfy their debts. 

The principle, therefore, is that if someone came to you seeking help, you don’t make their situation worse.

The truly righteous would never exploit others in their time of need. Likewise, if we truly care about others, we will use our resources to help them, not take advantage of their unfortunate circumstances by seeking to profit financially at their expense.

Don’t condemn the innocent.

A person with integrity is not for sale. He or she cannot be bought or swayed by the promise of gain, financial or otherwise. 

The scales of justice in the ancient Eastern world were usually tipped toward the rich. In both civil and criminal matters, the wealthy often bribed witnesses and judges. Average citizens who were not wealthy—were powerless and oppressed in this corrupt system. 

God would never allow anyone to live in His presence who uses their power to destroy those who have done no wrong. The thought must never even cross our minds.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, teach me not to take advantage of the needy; rather let me be a healer of the wounded. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
