Sri Lanka Launches One-Year Free Visa Program for Travelers From 40 Countries

Sri Lanka is introducing exciting travel changes designed to attract more international visitors during 2026 and beyond. The government recently approved a new free visa initiative covering travellers from forty eligible countries worldwide. Consequently, tourists may soon enjoy cheaper travel opportunities while exploring Sri Lanka’s famous beaches and cultural attractions.

Sri Lanka Approves Expanded Free Visa Initiative

Sri Lanka officially approved the expanded free visa proposal under the country’s Immigration and Emigration legislation recently. Authorities first introduced discussions regarding this tourism initiative during 2024 before receiving final approval in 2026. Furthermore, officials believe the policy will strengthen tourism recovery while encouraging increased international travel into Sri Lanka.

The government announced the updated program on May 7, 2026, following parliamentary approval procedures nationwide. Consequently, eligible travellers can now access tourist visas without paying traditional visa processing application charges.

Understanding Sri Lanka’s Free Visa Policy

Sri Lanka is not completely removing entry requirements for international tourists visiting the country under this initiative. Instead, eligible travellers must still complete the Electronic Travel Authorization process before beginning their journeys. The major change involves removing visa application fees previously required from foreign travellers entering Sri Lanka. Therefore, approved visitors can receive thirty-day tourist visas without paying standard Electronic Travel Authorization charges.

Countries Eligible For The Free Visa Program

Citizens from forty countries currently qualify for Sri Lanka’s expanded free visa travel initiative beginning this year. Eligible countries include Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Additionally, travellers from several Middle Eastern, Asian, and European countries also qualify under the new policy. Countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, and Turkey remain eligible currently. Furthermore, travellers from New Zealand, Malaysia, Pakistan, Nepal, and the Netherlands may also benefit greatly.

Electronic Travel Authorization Remains Necessary

Sri Lankan immigration authorities confirmed travellers must still complete online Electronic Travel Authorization applications before arrival. Therefore, tourists cannot enter Sri Lanka without obtaining official approval through the Electronic Travel Authorization system.

Applicants must provide travel details, passport information, and supporting documents during the online application process. Furthermore, travellers must satisfy all standard immigration conditions before receiving official Electronic Travel Authorization approval. Officials explained that maintaining the Electronic Travel Authorization system strengthens immigration security and improves traveller monitoring procedures.

How Travellers Can Apply Successfully

Eligible travellers can complete Electronic Travel Authorization applications through Sri Lanka’s official online immigration platform before departure. Although the visa fee disappears, completing the online application remains necessary before international travel.

Applicants usually need passports remaining valid for at least six months before entering Sri Lanka successfully. Additionally, travellers should provide return flight details, accommodation information, and other basic travel documentation during applications.

Most Electronic Travel Authorization applications receive approval within twenty-four to forty-eight hours after submission. However, authorities strongly recommend applying several days earlier to avoid unexpected processing delays before departure.

Visa Conditions And Extension Opportunities

The free tourist visa remains valid for thirty days after travellers arrive officially within Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the visa allows only single-entry travel during approved tourism visits under current immigration regulations. Visitors wishing longer stays may apply for visa extensions up to ninety days while staying within Colombo. However, travellers cannot use tourist visas for employment opportunities or permanent residence arrangements within Sri Lanka.

Duration And Purpose Of The Initiative

Sri Lanka plans to operate the free visa initiative for one year before conducting official policy evaluations. Additionally, authorities will review tourism performance after six months to measure the program’s overall effectiveness nationwide.

Government officials expect the initiative could attract approximately two hundred forty-seven thousand additional international tourists annually. Although Sri Lanka may lose millions through waived visa charges, authorities expect tourism spending to generate larger economic benefits.

Conclusion

Sri Lanka’s expanded free visa initiative represents an important step toward rebuilding tourism and encouraging international travel. Travellers from eligible countries can now explore Sri Lanka more affordably while following simple immigration procedures. Ultimately, the initiative could strengthen tourism growth while supporting businesses, airlines, hotels, and local communities nationwide.
