THE MOST HIGH GOD

Scripture Reading: Genesis 14
 
Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; Genesis 14:18-19
 
Melchizedek is the first person known to have been a priest of God. He was a priest of God before Israel became a nation. Melchizedek introduced Abraham to God as ‘God Most High’ – El-Elyon. He showed that the God that Abraham had chosen to worship and follow was above the gods he left behind in his father’s house.
 
The revelation of God as the Most High was of great importance to Abraham. He had just won a seemingly impossible battle. Melchizedek reminded Abraham that he was victorious because Abram had El-Elyon on his side.
 
When we listen to the news and read reports of all the things going on in our world, we may be tempted to feel helpless. But, as children of God, we must never lose sight of the presence of the Lord who is with us.

1. The Lord is Supreme. He is above all. 

Our Lord sits on top of all the powers of the world. Whatever they are called, whoever they may be and wherever the jurisdiction of their rule, God is higher than they all. No force, authority or entity stands equal to God by any measure. He is Supreme.

2. The Lord is Sovereign. He is greater than all. 

The Lord is God all by Himself. He does not need our permission to be who He is. Unlike human leaders who need people to elect them or accept them as rulers over others, God does not require the vote or approval of anyone to be God. He is sovereign and exists as God by Himself.

3. The Lord is Strongest. He is mightier than all.

Our Lord can disarm all the armies of the universe and give victory to whom He chooses. Abraham’s experience demonstrates this perfectly. He went up against five kings and still came out victorious. It takes a Mighty One, helping you to win under such circumstances.
 
When we know God as El-Elyon, we lift our eyes to Him at all times. He then becomes to us as is His name – the Highest One.  

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, you are God Most High. There is none comparable to you. My eyes are fixed on you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
