POSITION: Environment, Health & Safety Officer
GBfoods is seeking an Environment, Health & Safety Officer to join our team. If you hold a Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Safety & Health, Engineering, or a related field, and want to work in a fast paced manufacturing environment, this role offers the opportunity to lead continuous improvement initiatives, ensure regulatory compliance, and safeguard employees, contractors, and visitors.

As an EHS Officer, you will not simply inspect; you will promote accident prevention, analyze incident records, respond to emergencies, and foster a culture where safety and environmental stewardship come first.
Your Mission
You will take responsibility for promoting a continuous improvement strategy for EHS initiatives, implementing an EHS culture that secures effective policy implementation, responsibilities, and continuous improvement. Your role includes conducting shop floor inspections, ensuring contractors and suppliers comply with safety practices, promoting accident prevention and near miss reporting, and assisting with accident investigations. Additionally, you will analyze incident records, support risk assessments, respond to emergencies, ensure PPE use, safeguard the environment, and conduct safety inductions.
Key Responsibilities
Your role spans inspections, incident management, compliance, training, emergency response, and audit support. Here is what you will tackle:
Inspections & Assessments
- You will conduct or coordinate EHS inspections and assessments on the shop floor, assuring compliance with regulatory requirements and EHS initiatives.
- Identifying opportunities for improvement and providing recommendations based on your findings.
Contractor & Supplier Compliance
- You will ensure contractors, suppliers, and consultants comply with relevant legislation and follow the organization’s safety practices.
Accident Prevention & Investigation
- You will promote accident prevention and near miss reporting as tools to meet objectives.
- Assisting with accident investigations to ensure timely reporting, root cause identification, and corrective action tracking through to closure.
Incident Analysis
- You will analyze incident records including personal injury, property damage, fires, and chemical spills, taking corrective action as appropriate.
Risk Assessments
- You will support departments in preparing risk assessments, monitoring their availability and appropriateness, and ensuring safe working practices.
Employee Concerns & Emergency Response
- You will respond to employee safety and health concerns promptly.
- Also, assisting the company’s Occupational Health & Safety Committees.
- Afterwards, responding to fires and other emergencies as they arise.
PPE & Housekeeping
- You will ensure the use of all required Personal Protective Equipment by workers, contractors, and visitors.
- Ensuring the environment remains safeguarded with no environmental concerns or gaps.
- Ensuring provision of amenities and good housekeeping to make the workplace safe.
Safety Inductions & Maintenance
- You will perform safety inductions for contractors and visitors on site.
- Then, verifying safety adherence during plant maintenance.
- Also, performing safety checks before and after non routine works.
Equipment & Audits
- You will ensure firefighting equipment remains in good condition and serviced periodically.
- Providing support for internal and external audits for Health & Safety and Environmental Management Systems.
- Moreover, supervising implementation of corrective action findings to ensure continual improvement.
Training
- You will conduct training and induction for Environmental Management Systems and Occupational Health & Safety for new employees, contractors, and visitors.
What You Bring to the Role
Education & Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Safety & Health, EHS Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- A minimum of two years of experience in a Safety, Health, and Environmental role.
- Audit experience and knowledge or audit qualification in ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 gives you an added advantage.
- Experience in the manufacturing industry gives you an advantage.
Preferred Skills
- Ability to undertake health, safety, and environment training and inspections.
- Sound technical capabilities and understanding of processes, equipment, and operations.
- Good safety and environmental regulatory understanding.
- Good problem solving and corrective action resolution skills.
- Highly effective written and verbal communication skills with IT proficiency.
- Practical business acumen with high level of professionalism.
- Team player who displays integrity and honesty in all dealings.
