POSITION: Director, Legal Affairs Directorate
The University of Ghana is seeking a Director for its Legal Affairs Directorate, reporting to the Vice Chancellor, with a start date of August 1, 2026. If you possess proven leadership and administrative abilities, including evidence of coordinating teams, initiating policies, and mentoring staff, this four year renewable role offers the opportunity to provide legal advice, draft and review agreements and policies, represent the University in dispute resolution, supervise external legal services, and facilitate disciplinary boards and committees.

Your Mission
You will provide legal advice on all University matters under the Vice Chancellor. Your role includes drafting, reviewing, or interpreting all agreements and policies involving the University, representing or ensuring appropriate representation in dispute resolution proceedings including out of court settlements, and supervising all external legal services to ensure they meet the highest possible standards. Additionally, you will facilitate the work of disciplinary boards and committees, support the Appeals Board and Anti Corruption Committee, serve on relevant planning and policy making committees, review University initiatives for legal compliance, and perform other functions assigned by Council or the Vice Chancellor.

Your role spans legal advice, agreement review, dispute resolution, external service supervision, committee facilitation, compliance review, and policy participation. Here is what you will tackle:
Legal Advice
- You will provide legal advice on all University matters, guiding leadership on complex legal issues.
- Ensuring the University acts within its legal powers and obligations.
Agreement & Policy Review
- You will draft, review, or interpret all agreements and policies involving the University.
- Protecting the University’s interests in contracts, MOUs, and partnerships.
Dispute Resolution
- You will represent or ensure appropriate representation of the University in dispute resolution proceedings, including out of court settlements.
- Managing litigation, arbitration, and mediation matters.
External Legal Services
- You will supervise all external legal services provided to the University, ensuring they meet the highest possible standards.
- Managing external counsel, their fees, and their performance.
Committee Facilitation
- You will facilitate the work of disciplinary boards and committees, providing legal support in disciplinary proceedings.
- Facilitating the Appeals Board and Anti Corruption Committee of the University.
Compliance & Policy
- You will review University initiatives, decisions, and processes for legal compliance.
- Serving on relevant planning and policy making committees of the University.
What You Bring to the Role
Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree.
- A postgraduate degree in Law.
- Enrollment at the Ghana Bar Association.
Experience
- A minimum of fifteen years of post qualification experience.
- At least six of those years at the managerial level.
- Substantial litigation experience, demonstrating your ability to handle disputes.
Leadership & Administrative Abilities
- Proven experience coordinating work of units, sections, or teams.
- Evidence of ability to initiate policies.
- Evidence of ability to mentor junior legal professionals.

Salary & Tenure
- Salary: Attractive with fringe benefits including market premium, rent, security, and responsibility allowance.
- Tenure: Four years on terms approved by Council, before reaching the statutory retirement age of 60 years. The University may reappoint you for a further term of up to four years.
