Study in Canada | Laval University Excellence Scholarships 2027

International students aiming to pursue research focused Master’s, PhD, postdoctoral, or short term research programs in Canada now have an important funding opportunity to consider. Laval University has announced its pre selection process for the 2027–2028 Excellence Scholarships for International Students (PBEEE). Quebec’s Ministry of Higher Education (MES) funds this prestigious scholarship initiative.

The PBEEE program attracts outstanding international talent to Quebec’s higher education and research ecosystem. It provides substantial financial support to students and researchers from around the world. Successful candidates can receive funding ranging from CAD $3,000 per month for short term research stays to annual awards worth up to CAD $35,000 for advanced research programs.

Unlike many scholarship schemes where applicants apply directly to the funding agency, PBEEE candidates must first secure nomination and pre selection through a Quebec university. At Laval University, this internal selection process is already underway for the 2027–2028 competition.

Why This Scholarship Stands Out

Canada continues to strengthen its position as a global destination for high quality research and innovation. Through the PBEEE program, Quebec seeks to bring top international researchers and graduate students into its universities. The program also encourages international collaboration and scientific advancement.

The scholarship program supports multiple academic and research pathways. This makes it attractive to applicants at different stages of their academic careers.

Laval Scholarship Categories and Funding Packages

The PBEEE program divides itself into four funding components. Each component targets a different academic or research profile.

Component M – Master’s Research Scholarships: Students pursuing a research based Master’s degree may receive an annual scholarship value of CAD $20,000. Funding lasts up to 2 years. This component targets international Master’s researchers conducting advanced studies at Laval University.
Component 1 – Doctoral Research Scholarships: International PhD candidates can benefit from an annual scholarship value of CAD $25,000. Funding lasts up to 4 years. This supports full time doctoral research projects.
Component 2 – Postdoctoral Fellowships: Researchers seeking postdoctoral training opportunities in Quebec may receive a fellowship value of CAD $35,000 for one year. This funding is non renewable.
Component 3 – Short Term Research and Professional Development Grants: This category opens itself to university students and researchers interested in temporary academic collaborations or professional development activities. Benefits include CAD $3,000 per month for a funding period of up to 4 months. This supports short term research stays and professional development projects.

Who Can Apply

The program targets outstanding international students and researchers wishing to conduct research or advanced studies in Quebec. Eligible categories include international Master’s research applicants, international PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, researchers seeking short term academic collaborations, and students undertaking professional development activities. You must satisfy the eligibility criteria established by the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ).

An Important Requirement: Academic Host Support

One of the most critical elements of the application process is obtaining support from a faculty member at Laval University. Before submitting a pre selection application, you must secure a faculty member willing to host your research project. You need a supervisor who agrees to oversee your academic work. You require institutional support for your proposed research activities. Applications submitted without faculty sponsorship will not receive consideration during the internal pre selection process.
