POSITION: National Site Engineer
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is seeking a National Site Engineer for the Food Security Response in Northern Ghana project, funded by the European Union. If you possess proficiency in MS Office and project management software, plus experience in contract management and interpretation of construction drawings, this role offers the opportunity to supervise borehole drilling, aquifer testing, solar pumping system installation, water storage, drip irrigation, and civil works.
Why FAO?
FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger and improve food security. This EU funded project targets at least 10,000 households in Northern Ghana across three agricultural seasons. The project supports 6,000 maize farmers to produce 18,000 metric tonnes of maize, 2,400 millet farmers to produce 5,184 metric tonnes of millet, and 4,200 sorghum farmers to produce 8,517 metric tonnes of sorghum. Additionally, the project promotes climate adapted agricultural practices, improved grain storage technologies, organic fertilizer use, solar powered irrigation solutions, and sustainable agri techniques. As National Site Engineer, you will not simply design; you will supervise borehole drilling, aquifer testing, irrigation infrastructure installation, civil works, water storage, and distribution systems, ensuring compliance with technical specifications, safety standards, and project timelines.
Your Mission
You will take responsibility for supervising sites and work, checking layout, line, and levels against construction drawings. Your role includes overseeing borehole drilling, construction, aquifer testing, solar powered pumping system installation, water storage and distribution infrastructure, civil works, and drip irrigation. You will ensure all construction conforms to specifications and quality standards, monitor contractor work programs, prepare progress reports, enforce site safety and environmental safeguards, interpret technical drawings, resolve technical challenges, assist in measuring completed works, and ensure compliance with Ghana national safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Your role spans site supervision, quality control, contractor monitoring, reporting, safety enforcement, and technical problem solving. Here is what you will tackle:
Site Supervision
- You will supervise sites and work, checking layout, line, and levels against construction drawings.
- Overseeing borehole drilling, construction, aquifer testing, and solar pumping system installation.
- Supervising water storage and distribution infrastructure, civil works, and drip irrigation.
Quality Control
- You will ensure all construction conforms to specifications, codes of practice, and quality standards.
- Conducting material testing including concrete slump and compaction tests.
Contractor Monitoring
- You will monitor the contractor’s work program, identify delays, and ensure compliance with the schedule.
- Liaising with the contractor’s team to resolve technical challenges.
Reporting
- You will prepare daily, weekly, or monthly progress reports on activities, resources, and site conditions.
- Preparing quarterly progress reports and a comprehensive end of assignment report.
Safety & Environmental Compliance
- You will enforce site safety regulations, health conditions, and environmental safeguards.
- Ensuring full compliance with Ghana national safety standards.
Technical Problem Solving
- You will interpret technical drawings and resolve technical challenges on site.
- Assisting in measuring completed works to support the contract manager.
What You Bring to the Role
Minimum Requirements
- An advanced university degree from an institution recognized by the International Association of Universities or UNESCO in Irrigation, Civil, Geology, Agricultural, Water Resource, Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil Engineering, or a related field.
- Registration as an engineer with a recognized professional body.
- At least five years of relevant field experience in solar irrigation management, water systems installation, borehole drilling, irrigation infrastructure, or related civil or water infrastructure works.
- At least two years of site supervision experience on similar infrastructure projects, including supervision of contractors, quality control, review of technical specifications and drawings, and monitoring of works against approved timelines.
- Working knowledge of English (Level C).
- Ghanaian nationality.
Technical/Functional Skills
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word) and project management software such as MS Project.
- Construction supervision and site management.
- Proven experience in contract management for civil works, particularly in irrigation system installation and related infrastructure.
- Interpretation of construction drawings, specifications, and Bills of Quantities.
- Borehole drilling supervision and groundwater or aquifer testing knowledge.
- Irrigation systems installation, especially drip irrigation systems.
- Material testing and quality control including concrete slump tests and compaction tests.
- Knowledge of construction methods, codes, and standards.
- Health, Safety, and Environmental compliance on construction sites.
- Project scheduling and basic construction planning tools.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in measurements and reporting.
- Implementation of relevant codes and standards.

Selection Criteria
- Prior experience working with FAO or any UN agency.
- Prior experience working with the government and other relevant institutions in Ghana.
- Experience in projects related to solar irrigation or water systems installation gives you an advantage.
