Study in Italy | IUSS Pavia Scholarships 2027

For international graduates looking for a funded PhD in Europe, most opportunities either offer strong funding with limited research options or exciting research with limited financial support. The newly announced 2027-2028 doctoral admissions at IUSS Pavia in Italy stand out because they combine both. With only 23 funded doctoral positions available, the competition will attract applicants from around the world seeking advanced research training in neuroscience, artificial intelligence, linguistics, philosophy, and earthquake engineering.

The Scuola Universitaria Superiore IUSS Pavia hosts this intake. IUSS Pavia is one of Italy’s specialized graduate schools known for its research intensive environment and partnerships with leading European universities and research institutes. Successful candidates receive funded doctoral positions, dedicated research budgets, and opportunities to work on cutting edge projects ranging from cognitive brain sciences and language processing to AI verification systems and seismic risk modelling.

What Applicants Will Receive

Prospective PhD candidates often ask whether the funding is enough to focus on research without financial stress. The IUSS Pavia doctoral scholarships offer an annual stipend of €18,645.63, paid monthly throughout the duration of the PhD.

In addition to the stipend, doctoral researchers receive:

Dedicated Annual Research Budget: Approximately €1,864 for conference participation, research activities, fieldwork, and academic mobility
50 Percent Scholarship Increase: During approved international research stays abroad
Insurance Coverage: For the entire doctoral period

This funding package supports full time research engagement.

PhD Programmes Available for 2027 at Pavia IUSS

The IUSS Pavia University scholarships 2027-2028 intake includes four fully funded doctoral programmes taught in English:

PhD in Cognitive Brain Sciences: Explore the neural basis of cognition
PhD in The Human Mind and Its Explanations: Language, Brain and Reasoning (HuME): Interdisciplinary study of mind and language
PhD in Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics: Advanced linguistic research
PhD in Earthquake Engineering (ROSE): Seismic risk mitigation and modelling

Several funded positions link themselves to specific research themes. These include cognitive neuroscience, semantic memory, AI verification systems, neuro-symbolic learning, experimental pragmatics, psychiatric language disorders, computational linguistics, earthquake vulnerability assessment, and seismic risk mitigation.

The HuME programme is particularly notable for applicants seeking research topics aligned with emerging technologies and interdisciplinary science. It includes funded projects related to artificial intelligence, reasoning systems, and the philosophical foundations of knowledge.

Who Should Consider Applying

The opportunity opens itself to applicants from all countries. You must hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent qualification before the doctoral programme begins.

What makes this intake attractive is its interdisciplinary approach. Applicants with backgrounds in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, linguistics, computer science, artificial intelligence, philosophy, engineering, mathematics, geosciences, and related disciplines may find relevant research pathways depending on the programme selected.

All four PhD programmes use English as their working language. International candidates can pursue their studies without needing Italian language proficiency.

Why These PhD Positions Are Likely to Be Competitive

Unlike large doctoral intakes that recruit dozens or even hundreds of candidates, IUSS Pavia offers only 23 funded positions across all programmes. Applicants compete for highly selective research placements.

However, the small intake size also creates advantages. Doctoral researchers gain closer supervision, stronger research integration, and collaboration opportunities with institutions such as the University of Milan, University of Pavia, Scuola Normale Superiore, University College London, Fondazione Eucentre, and other international partners.

For candidates pursuing academic careers or research intensive industry positions, these partnerships significantly strengthen future research networks and publication opportunities.

What the Application Requires

Prepare academic transcripts, degree certificates, curriculum vitae, research proposals where required, and supporting academic documents. Several programmes also encourage recommendation letters from academic referees.

The selection process combines evaluation of academic credentials and research potential with an interview conducted either online or in person. Research fit will play a major role in final selection decisions.
