Career Opportunity Overview

We actively seek a dedicated Safety Officer for Surface operations to join our Safety and Health department. This role carries tremendous responsibility, focusing on safeguarding all personnel and third parties operating within our surface facilities. The successful candidate will report directly to the Safety Superintendent and serve as a critical link between management and workforce safety initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities

This position demands proactive engagement across multiple safety domains. Key duties include:

• Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify and immediately correct unsafe practices or conditions before incidents occur
• Foster a robust safety culture through consistent workforce engagement and positive reinforcement during site visits
• Execute planned audits using structured checklists to evaluate equipment compliance and safety standards
• Ensure full adherence to statutory occupational health and safety requirements across all surface operations
• Participate actively in Mine Inspector inquiries and inspections, representing the company professionally
• Facilitate comprehensive risk assessments for operational activities while tracking all significant risks identified through various sources
• Investigate all incidents thoroughly, recommending and enforcing remedial measures to prevent recurrence
• Monitor compliance through periodic planned job observations and targeted employee inspections
• Deliver ongoing on-the-job safety training to enhance worker awareness and promote safe task execution
• Verify that all personal protective equipment meets company standards and enforce proper usage
• Lead or participate in safety meetings, including committee sessions and toolbox talks
• Enforce all health and safety protocols mandated by AngloGold Ashanti and regulatory bodies

Required Qualifications and Experience

Educational Background:

We require a Degree in Engineering, Physical Sciences, or a related field from an accredited institution. Candidates must hold ISO 45001 internal or lead auditor certification alongside Process Safety Engineering or Management credentials. Incident investigation certification in methodologies like IIP or Taproot proves essential. While not mandatory, a Health and Safety Certificate of Competency from Ghana’s Minerals Commission provides a distinct advantage. A valid Ghanaian driving license remains a strong plus.

Professional Experience:

The ideal candidate brings 4 to 8 years of mining industry experience. This background must include practical application of health and safety principles across mine processing plants, surface infrastructure, engineering workspaces, and maintenance workshops. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications remains non-negotiable. Additionally, experience in construction safety, greenfield and brownfield projects, along with project management capabilities, will set candidates apart.
