Italy National PhD Scholarships 2027

Italy’s University of Trento just launched one of Europe’s largest space focused PhD intakes. The 42nd Cycle of the National PhD Programme in Space Science and Technology offers 41 doctoral positions for the 2026/27 academic year. Thirty of these come with fully funded scholarships. For researchers dreaming of careers in space exploration, satellite technology, astrophysics, or aerospace engineering, this opportunity demands serious attention.

What Makes This PhD Programme Stand Out

Most specialised doctoral programmes admit only a handful of candidates. Trento opens 41 positions across multiple research curricula within Space Science and Technology. The programme combines advanced scientific training with hands on research in space missions, aerospace systems, space engineering, astrophysics, satellite technologies, Earth observation, and data science for space applications.

Successful candidates join an international research environment in Italy. They work alongside leading academics and researchers in one of Europe’s most active scientific ecosystems.

Available Positions and Scholarships

The 2026/27 intake breaks down clearly:

41 total PhD positions
30 funded scholarships
5 positions reserved for scholarship holders from foreign countries
5 positions reserved for Kenyan citizens
1 position reserved for candidates collaborating with academic institutions or research centres in Italy or abroad

Remaining positions go through the regular competitive selection process.

Who Can Apply

Candidates of all nationalities can apply. No gender or age restrictions apply. You need:

A Master’s degree or equivalent qualification recognised by the admissions committee
An Italian Laurea Magistrale or equivalent foreign postgraduate degree

Students still completing their master’s degree may still apply if they expect to obtain their qualification no later than 31 October 2026. The programme welcomes applicants from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania, and other international regions.

Research Curricula Available

The selection procedure covers eight different curricula within the Space Science and Technology doctoral programme. Furthermore, these research tracks cover diverse scientific and technological fields connected to modern space research and innovation.

Examples from recent cycles include AI driven decision support systems for smart satellite manufacturing, mechatronic systems for the LISA Gravitational Reference System, metallic additive manufacturing for aerospace microsatellites, and cybersecure data sharing frameworks for distributed satellite manufacturing. Other tracks cover formal methods for autonomous space systems, Earth observation instruments, and space economy and diplomacy .

How Selection Works

Admission is highly competitive. The process combines academic merit and research potential.

Stage 1: Evaluation of Qualifications
The admissions committee assesses academic achievements, educational background, research experience, scientific aptitude, and supporting materials. You need at least 35 out of 60 points to progress.

Stage 2: Oral Interview
Shortlisted candidates participate in an oral interview covering scientific knowledge, research interests, motivation, and suitability for doctoral research. You must score at least 25 out of 40 points. The final score adds to 100 total points.
