Study in Germany | Heidelberg University Amirana Scholarship 2027

For many international students, gaining admission to medical school marks only the beginning of a challenging journey. Financial crises such as family emergencies, currency devaluation, loss of sponsorship, or unexpected setbacks can threaten years of hard work and academic progress.

To support students facing these challenges, Heidelberg University invites applications for the Amirana Scholarship 2027. This emergency funding program helps international medical and dental students from developing countries remain enrolled when financial hardship puts their education at risk.

Unlike merit-based scholarships that focus on academic achievement, the Amirana Scholarship provides critical financial support to students who already study at Heidelberg University and need assistance to continue their degree programs.

Who Can Apply?

The scholarship welcomes applications from international students studying Medicine or Dentistry at Heidelberg University’s Heidelberg or Mannheim campuses.

Applicants must:

  • Come from a low- or middle-income country in the Global South according to OECD DAC classifications
  • Face unexpected financial difficulties that threaten their ability to continue their studies
  • Demonstrate a genuine need for financial assistance

Scholarship Benefits

The Amirana Scholarship offers short-term financial support during periods of severe hardship.

Recipients may receive:

  • Monthly grants ranging from €300 to €500
  • Assistance with living expenses or tuition costs
  • Funding for up to one year
  • Additional support for students preparing for state examinations or completing doctoral research, allowing them to reduce working hours and focus on their studies

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Hold active enrollment in Medicine or Dentistry at Heidelberg University
  • Come from a low- or middle-income country in the Global South
  • Experience genuine financial hardship beyond their control
  • Have reached an advanced stage of their studies, such as preparation for state examinations or work on a doctoral thesis

The Story Behind the Scholarship

Dr. Mahomed T. Amirana and Dr. Annelene J. Amirana, both Heidelberg medical alumni, established the scholarship fund in 2016. The couple met while studying in Germany during the 1950s.

During his studies, Mahomed Amirana received financial assistance that helped him complete his medical education. Inspired by that experience, the Amiranas created this fund to support future generations of international students.

Since 2016, the scholarship has helped more than 25 international medical and dental students continue their education at Heidelberg University.
