Study in USA | American Doctoral Fellowships 2027

Women pursuing doctoral research in the United States now have a major funding window to watch: the AAUW American Doctoral Fellowship 2027 will open for applications on August 17, 2026, offering a $25,000 stipend to eligible doctoral scholars for one year of academic support.

This is not a routine university discount or small research grant. The American Doctoral Fellowship is part of AAUW’s historic American Fellowships program, established in 1888 and widely known as one of the oldest non-institutional graduate funding sources for women in the United States. For doctoral candidates facing the expensive final stretch of research, writing, data collection, fieldwork, or academic preparation, this fellowship can provide serious breathing room.

Who This Fellowship Is Designed For

The AAUW American Doctoral Fellowship is open to applicants who identify as women and are pursuing their first doctoral degree. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and must begin their doctoral program on or before September 30, 2027.

The fellowship is available across all fields of study, but AAUW especially encourages applications from women working in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or research connected to gender issues. Applicants studying at research-limited institutions, including R2 institutions, are also encouraged to apply because institutional context is considered during review.

What the Fellowship Covers

The AAUW American Doctoral Fellowship provides a $25,000 stipend. The amount is paid directly to fellows in two equal installments: one at the beginning of the fellowship term and the second around the midpoint. This funding is meant to offset doctoral expenses during one year of study, helping scholars continue academic work without being forced to slow down progress because of financial pressure.
