POSITION: Safety Supervisor
Underground Mining Alliance Akyem (UMAA) operates as a formidable Joint Venture between African Underground Mining Services Limited (AUMS) and Rocksure International, delivering exceptional underground development and production services for the AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi) Mine. We currently seek a qualified and experienced Safety Supervisor to join our dedicated team and champion our commitment to operational excellence through uncompromising safety standards.
A Role of Critical Importance
The Safety Supervisor position represents a cornerstone of our operational integrity. You will take responsibility for ensuring all mining operations proceed safely while maintaining full compliance with company policies, mining regulations, and occupational health and safety standards. Your primary focus will center on preventing accidents, injuries, occupational illnesses, and damage to equipment and property. Consequently, we seek an individual who combines technical safety expertise with strong leadership capabilities and genuine commitment to fostering a positive safety culture.
Core Responsibilities
Your daily activities will encompass a comprehensive range of safety leadership functions:
- Ensure employees comply fully with safety rules, procedures, and regulations
- Monitor adherence to company Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) standards rigorously
- Promote a strong safety culture across all mine operations consistently
- Perform regular inspections of underground and surface work areas
- Identify unsafe conditions and practices proactively
- Recommend and follow up on corrective actions effectively
- Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and comprehensive risk assessments
- Identify potential hazards before work commences
- Ensure adequate control measures implementation
- Investigate accidents, near misses, and unsafe occurrences thoroughly
- Determine root causes and recommend preventive measures
- Prepare investigation reports and maintain accurate records
- Conduct safety inductions for new employees and contractors
- Organize toolbox talks and safety meetings regularly
- Educate workers on safe work practices and emergency procedures
- Ensure employees wear and properly use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Inspect PPE for suitability and condition consistently
- Report PPE shortages and replacement needs promptly
- Assist in developing and implementing emergency response plans
- Coordinate emergency drills including fire, evacuation, and mine rescue exercises
- Ensure emergency equipment availability and functionality
- Ensure compliance with mining laws, environmental regulations, and occupational health requirements
- Support inspections and audits by regulatory authorities
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly safety reports thoroughly
- Maintain records of inspections, incidents, training, and corrective actions
- Track safety performance indicators diligently
- Monitor contractors’ compliance with site safety requirements
- Ensure contractors receive appropriate safety orientation and supervision
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Educational Foundation: Candidates must hold a Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, Mining Engineering, or a related field. Professional safety certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, ISO 45001, or equivalent provide essential credentials. First Aid and Emergency Response certification remains mandatory.
- Professional Experience: We require a minimum of 3 to 5 years of progressive experience in occupational health and safety, preferably within the mining industry. This experience should demonstrate proven capability in conducting safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments.
- Core Competencies Required: Strong knowledge of mining health, safety, and environmental regulations proves fundamental. Your ability to identify workplace hazards and conduct thorough risk assessments will determine success. Incident and accident investigation skills, excellent report writing abilities, and strong communication capabilities remain essential. Leadership and team supervision abilities, training and coaching skills for safety awareness, problem-solving decision-making capabilities, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications complete the required competency profile.
