New Zealand to End At-Home OET for Immigration; New Policy Begins July 13

New Zealand is introducing another important immigration update for healthcare professionals planning overseas opportunities. From July 2026, applicants using the Occupational English Test will face stricter testing requirements aimed at strengthening examination integrity and identity verification.

The change means remote testing will no longer qualify for immigration purposes. Healthcare workers planning work or residence applications should prepare early and adjust testing timelines accordingly.

Understanding the Occupational English Test (OET)

The Occupational English Test is an English proficiency examination created specifically for healthcare professionals. Unlike standard language assessments, the exam measures communication skills through practical healthcare situations and workplace interactions.

Doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, dentists, and other healthcare professionals commonly use OET when applying for jobs, visas, and residency opportunities in countries such as New Zealand, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Who Will Be Affected by the New Rule?

The revised policy applies only to applicants using OET to satisfy New Zealand’s English language requirements. These requirements may apply across work visa categories, residence pathways, and selected immigration programmes. Applicants relying on alternative approved tests, including IELTS or PTE Academic, remain unaffected and may continue following existing immigration procedures.

New OET Testing Requirements Explained

Beginning July 13, 2026, all OET examinations intended for New Zealand immigration must be completed at an authorised and supervised testing location. Any at-home or remotely supervised OET completed on or after the implementation date will no longer be accepted. The policy officially takes effect from midnight on July 12, 2026, under New Zealand Standard Time.

Authorities introduced this measure to strengthen confidence in language testing outcomes and improve identity verification standards.

Existing OET Results Remain Valid

Applicants who already completed an at-home OET do not need immediate concern. Results obtained before July 13, 2026, remain acceptable under current immigration requirements. Candidates who plan to use remote testing should therefore complete examinations before the transition deadline where possible. Immigration New Zealand is also working alongside OET providers to support applicants during implementation.

What Healthcare Professionals Should Do Next

Healthcare workers planning immigration should update testing schedules and secure authorised test centre appointments early. This may become especially important in locations where available testing slots fill quickly. Applicants should also evaluate other approved language testing options if greater scheduling flexibility is needed.

Conclusion

New Zealand’s latest policy highlights the growing global shift toward secure and supervised immigration assessments. While the update introduces additional planning requirements, healthcare professionals who prepare early can continue navigating their immigration journey with confidence and minimal disruption.
